Iceland Beyond the Ordinary: A Journey Into a Land of Fire, Water & Folklore

Some trips are about checking destinations off a list. Others are about slowing down, experiencing a place in a completely different way, and discovering the magic that happens when you step a little off the beaten path.

My recent trip to Iceland reminded me, once again, why I keep coming back.

This was my third visit to Iceland, and somehow, I still find myself in awe. Every time I go, I’m struck by just how small I feel compared to the vast landscape around me. The mountains, rugged coastlines, lava fields, and seemingly endless stretches of land have a way of putting things into perspective.

And then there’s the air. I honestly don't think I've ever breathed air that felt so fresh. It's the kind of place where you take a deep breath, look around, and feel grateful just to be there.

A couple of hours northwest of Reykjavík, we found ourselves immersed in a side of Iceland that felt a world away from the ordinary. Imagine small-village charm, wide-open landscapes, the sound of the ocean, and a pace of life that invites you to take a deep breath and simply be.

A Different Kind of Iceland Experience

Our days weren't spent rushing from one attraction to the next. Instead, we settled into the rhythm of a small Icelandic village and experienced some of the simple things that make traveling so special.

We soaked in hot springs, visited the local swimming pool, and spent time hiking along the rugged coastline. There was plenty of fresh fish and comforting bowls of soup along the way — the kind of meals that taste even better after a day spent outdoors.

We practiced yoga twice a day, giving ourselves time to slow down, reconnect, and take in our surroundings. In a world that always seems to be moving a million miles an hour, there was something wonderful about making space for that.

Of course, Iceland wouldn't be Iceland without a little adventure.

We explored a vast lava field, rode Icelandic horses, and chased a waterfall. Everywhere we turned, the landscape seemed to change. One moment, it was the dramatic coastline; the next, an almost otherworldly stretch of land that made us feel incredibly small in the best possible way.

And through it all, we were welcomed by the people of Iceland. Their kindness and warmth are something I never take for granted. There's a genuine friendliness that makes you feel welcome, whether you're sharing a meal, visiting a local spot, or simply going about your day.

Iceland has a way of reminding you just how big, beautiful, and wonderfully untamed our world can be — while making you feel right at home at the same time.

A Land of Trolls, Tales & a Little Mystery

One of the things I find fascinating about Iceland is its connection to folklore and the hidden world of elves and trolls.

These stories are woven into Icelandic culture and traditions, adding another layer of intrigue to an already extraordinary landscape. With its unusual rock formations, misty mountains, dark lava fields, and sweeping stretches of seemingly untouched land, it's easy to understand how these legends have endured.

You find yourself looking at the landscape a little differently, wondering what stories the land might tell if it could talk. And honestly? I think a little mystery is part of the fun.

Icelandic Horses: One Ride Is Never Enough

If there’s one experience I know I want to repeat, it’s riding an Icelandic horse.

There is something special about these horses. They’re sturdy, sure-footed, and perfectly suited to Iceland’s rugged terrain, with their thick manes blowing in the wind and an unmistakable personality of their own.

And then there’s the tölt.

The tölt is a smooth, four-beat gait unique to Icelandic horses in its distinctive form. Unlike the trot, which can leave riders bouncing in the saddle, the tölt offers a remarkably smooth ride. It’s one of the defining characteristics of this special breed, and something you really have to experience for yourself.

Here’s another fascinating fact: Icelandic horses that leave the country are not permitted to return. This strict rule helps protect the breed from diseases that could be introduced from elsewhere. Even a horse that travels abroad for an international competition cannot come home to Iceland. It’s another example of how seriously Iceland protects the things that make its natural and cultural heritage so unique.

After three visits and three different rides, I’m already looking forward to getting back in the saddle. Some experiences are simply worth repeating.

What about the Puffins?

As much as I love looking back on this latest adventure, I’m already thinking about what I want to experience next.

One thing I'd love to include in a future Iceland adventure is seeing puffins along the coast. With their colorful beaks, distinctive little faces, and entertaining personalities, these seabirds are a favorite for many travelers.

Puffins typically visit Iceland to nest during the warmer months, making summer the best time to plan a trip around seeing them. There’s something special about watching wildlife in its natural habitat, surrounded by the dramatic coastal scenery that makes Iceland so unforgettable.

Between the puffins, the horses, the waterfalls, and the incredible landscapes, Iceland always seems to give me another reason to return.

Why Iceland Belongs on Your Travel List

If Iceland is on your wish list, I encourage you to think beyond the most photographed sights.

Yes, the waterfalls are spectacular. The volcanic landscapes are unforgettable. And the hot springs are every bit as inviting as you might imagine.

But there's also something special about spending time in a small village, experiencing local traditions, enjoying the food, connecting with nature, and giving yourself permission not to rush.

Iceland can be adventurous, peaceful, rugged, and restorative — sometimes all in the same day.

It's a destination that offers so much more than a pretty picture. It's an opportunity to experience a place that feels truly different from anywhere else, meet people who make you feel welcome, and reconnect with the simple joy of being somewhere extraordinary.

For me, Iceland is a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about how many places you visit. They're about how a place makes you feel. And every time I leave Iceland, I know I'll be back.

Could Iceland Be Your Next Adventure?

We are already looking ahead to summer 2028 and organizing a group adventure to share this remarkable country with other likeminded travelers.

We are going to create an experience that goes beyond simply checking off the famous sights. Envision incredible landscapes, local village life, Icelandic food, a little folklore, and opportunities to slow down and really take in the destination.

Perhaps we'll find ourselves chasing waterfalls, taking in the coastal scenery, learning more about Iceland's fascinating traditions, or getting back in the saddle for another ride on those incredible Icelandic horses.

The details are still taking shape, but the thought of sharing a country I love with a group of curious travelers is exciting. If Iceland has been on your mind, I'd love to hear from you. Let me know if you'd be interested in joining a possible Iceland adventure in 2028!
