There are some destinations that you visit, and then there are destinations that completely take your breath away. New Zealand is one of those places.

Located on the other side of the world, New Zealand may take a little more effort to reach, but once you arrive, it doesn’t take long to understand why it is considered one of the adventure capitals of the world. From dramatic mountains and turquoise lakes to incredible hiking trails, geothermal wonders and some of the most spectacular fjords in the world.
Queenstown: Endless Adventure
Our time in the South Island brought us to Queenstown, a place where adventure seems to be part of everyday life.
Whether you're looking for heart-pounding adventure or simply want to take in the scenery, Queenstown makes a wonderful base for exploring the South Island.
And for those who love to hike, New Zealand is truly hard to beat. There are trails for nearly every level, with views that seem to get better around every corner.

Milford Sound: Nature at Its Most Dramatic
One of the highlights of exploring the South Island was experiencing Milford Sound. Towering mountains, cascading waterfalls and dramatic cliffs surround the fjord, creating scenery that is difficult to comprehend in person.
It is the kind of place where you find yourself looking around and thinking, How is this real?
The scenery isn't something you simply drive past, it becomes part of the experience. I truly thought I was in another world. There are only two permanent active waterfalls inside Milford Sound... So you want rain when you are there, so you can see hundreds of waterfalls!

Mount Aspiring National Park & The Great Outdoors

If you know me at all, you know I am always searching for the next National Park to check off my list. Mount Aspiring National Park in the south island was another checkmark. Where mountains, rivers, forests and hiking trails come together in one incredible landscape.

Rotorua: A Completely Different Side of New Zealand
As we continued north, the scenery and the experience changed completely.
Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity, and visiting Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland was a great reminder of just how diverse New Zealand's landscapes are. Bubbling mud pools, colorful geothermal features and steaming landscapes make this area feel almost otherworldly.

Auckland & Waiheke Island
Our time in the North Island also brought us to Auckland, a city that provides a completely different perspective on New Zealand. From the iconic Sky Tower and waterfront to the surrounding islands and coastal scenery, Auckland is a great place to begin or end a New Zealand adventure.
A visit to Waiheke Island adds yet another change of pace, with beautiful scenery, beaches and a more relaxed island atmosphere just a short trip from the city.

So, Is New Zealand Worth the Long Flight?
Absolutely.
New Zealand is a destination for travelers who want more than simply sitting by a pool for a week.
It is for the person who wants to see something incredible, walk somewhere they've never been, experience a different culture and come home with stories they couldn't have created anywhere else.
It is mountains and fjords. It is hiking trails and waterfalls. It is geothermal landscapes and Māori culture. It is adventure, relaxation, food, wine and some seriously unforgettable scenery.
And perhaps my favorite thing about New Zealand is that there is always another corner waiting to be explored.
Whether you're dreaming of hiking through the South Island, experiencing the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, exploring Auckland and its surrounding islands, or adding in a little Lord of the Rings magic along the way, New Zealand can be as adventurous or as relaxed as you want it to be.
New Zealand isn't just somewhere you go. It's somewhere you experience.
